The Elementary/Middle Special Education Bachelor of Science program is geared toward providing tailored support and opportunities for children with diverse learning needs, ensuring that every child has access to an equitable and quality education. The program has been designed for educators who are committed to nurturing the potential of those students, to maintaining high expectations for all learners, and to partnering with families for success. With a focus on evidence-based practices, intervention and collaboration, graduates emerge prepared to make a significant impact in today’s classrooms, advocating for the success and well-being of all students.
This program leads to teacher licensure. Certification follows one of two tracks, with an emphasis on either inclusive general education settings, or special education service delivery:
- Track 1: Special Education Certification: Mild to Moderate Disabilities Certification (Grades 1-8) and Severe Disability Endorsement (Birth-21)
- Track 2: Elementary General and Special Education Certification: Elementary Education Certification (Grades 1-6) and Mild to Moderate Disabilities Certification (Grades 1-8)
With a focus on academic rigor, practical experience, and professional development, our Middle School Education - Mathematics and Science Concentration, Bachelor of Science program empowers students to become effective and inspiring educators in the critical areas of mathematics and science.
This program leads to a teacher certification and dual certification in mathematics and science grades 4-9.

Housed within the School of Music, the Music Education, Bachelor of Music Education (B.M.E.) program prepares the next generation of exemplary musician-educators for long and successful careers in choral, instrumental or general music teaching.
This program leads to a teacher licensure.
The School Improvement Leadership Post-Baccalaureate Certificate (PBC) is a 18-credit graduate program which leads to ÀË»¨Ö±²¥ Administrator I Certification. This fully on-line program provides a part-time, state-wide cohort-based professional learning experience which supports teacher leaders who aspire to become school leaders in meeting the requirements for MSDE Admin I certification.
As a double major in English Language and Literature and English Education, the Secondary Education, Bachelor of Arts (B.A.): English Area of Concentration program is both highly regarded and in demand. It prepares educators to provide the critically important knowledge and skills necessary to flourish in an increasingly complex world.
Through a long term collaborative relationship with partnering public school districts, students gain practical experience and learn from expert master teachers while developing their individual approaches to teaching and learning.
This program leads to teacher licensure and a double major degree in English Education and English Language and Literature.
Secondary Education - Mathematics Concentration (Terrapin Teachers), B.S.
Bachelor of Science
The Secondary Education, Mathematics Concentration program is part of Terrapin Teachers, an innovative undergraduate STEM education certification pathway. It addresses the critical need for math educators in grades 7-12. Math educators play a pivotal role in shaping students' critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities. Through this program, you'll study mathematics and gain the necessary skills to teach math effectively.
This program leads to teacher certification eligibility as a secondary mathematics major.
The Secondary Education - Science Concentration (Terrapin Teachers) program is part of Terrapin Teachers, an innovative undergraduate STEM education certification pathway. Science education is vital for fostering curiosity and meeting the challenges of the 21st century, making the role of the science educator indispensable. It offers an opportunity to join us in cultivating the next generation of scientists and innovators, and experience the fulfillment of guiding young minds through the marvels of science.
This program leads to teacher licensure and a double major in Secondary Education Science and a chosen scientific discipline.

The program in Secondary Education - Social Studies Concentration, B.A. or B.S. prepares aspiring educators for a dynamic career shaping the minds of students in grades 7-12, fostering critical thinking, civic engagement and informed citizenship. With a curriculum emphasizing social justice-oriented teaching and hands-on classroom experiences, graduates emerge ready to make a difference in the lives of students.
This program leads to a teacher certification and a double degree or double major in Secondary Social Studies Education and one of three specialty areas: history, government, or geography.
Secondary Education - World Languages Concentration, B.A.
Bachelor of Arts
The Secondary Education, Bachelor of Arts (B.A.): World Languages Area of Concentration program addresses the need for certified language teachers in an increasingly global society. Through coursework and internships, students learn to adapt teaching methods for diverse learners, cultivating global competency and cultural awareness.
This program leads to teacher licensure and a double major in World Language Education and the students’ chosen language specialty.

The Secondary Education Minor offers non-education majors a pathway to explore the teaching profession through a curated selection of education courses. It covers essential topics that include adolescent development and education policies. Upon completion, students will have a deeper understanding of education theory and strategies to address the needs of students in today's high schools.
Students in the following majors/subject areas are eligible to declare the minor in secondary education:

Special Education - Early Childhood Specialty (Birth-Age 5) and Autism Spectrum Disorder Specialty, M.Ed.
Master of Education

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Special Education, Specialty: Early Childhood Birth to Age 5, Shady Grove (MSPEC) is a 30-credit, 10-course curriculum that addresses the developmental and learning needs of our youngest ages birth-5. Graduate work addresses the developmental and learning needs of our youngest ages birth-5 including those with physical, sensory (e.g., deaf-blindness, cortical visual impairment, etc.), and multiple disabilities. The program focuses on providing the graduate student the knowledge, skills and abilities that support efforts to achieve equitable developmental and academic achievement for all.
The program is designed for professionals who already hold an early childhood special education teacher license/certification, professionals interested in expanding their knowledge, skills, and abilities with those with special needs from Birth-Age 5, and for professionals interested in working in an early childhood special education context outside of the classroom.
Special Education - Specialty Autism Spectrum Disorders, M.Ed. (Online)
Master of Education
This 30-credit hour Special Education, Master of Education (M.Ed.) Specialty Autism Spectrum Disorders (ONLINE) program is designed for professionals interested in increasing their skills and expanding their knowledge to better serve the increasing number of students with ASD with high intensity needs. This M.Ed program is interested in recruiting members from underrepresented groups, including applicants with disabilities, multilingual applicants and applicants from racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds.
The Special Education - with Certification, Master of Education (M.Ed.) program enables aspiring educators to be functional in classrooms where students have diverse needs. To ensure preparation for diverse classroom settings and needs, faculty embed self-reflection, advocacy, critical consciousness and cultural competence throughout the program of study. Teacher candidates will be prepared to teach students with support students at-risk, students in need of intervention, and students with mild to severe disabilities, across disability categories. M.Ed. programs are practitioner focused programs that focus on in-classroom experiences and prepare educators for working with students. A bachelor's degree in any field is required.
Special Education for General Education Teachers in Inclusive Classrooms, Graduate Certificate
The Institute for the Study of Exceptional Children and Youth, in the Counseling, Higher Education and Special Education Department, is pleased to offer a unique Graduate Certificate program designed for General Education teachers: Special Education for General Education Teachers in Inclusive Classrooms.
This program prepares educators to meet the needs of students with disabilities in inclusive classroom settings. The skills gained through this program will equip participants to better serve all students in their schools.
With one course at a time, this certificate program is designed for busy professionals to increase their skills as they complete five online graduate classes consecutively.
Once completed, the certificate can be used to fulfill half of an online MEd in Special Education with a special focus on autism if scholars wish to continue on directly.
With increasing awareness of diverse learner needs, Special Education teachers are in demand, and the Special Education with Severe Disabilities Endorsement, Master of Education program caters to this demand through 30 credit hours of intensive coursework focused on birth through grade 12.
This option is ONLY for teachers with a special education certificate. Coursework and field experiences are offered to obtain ÀË»¨Ö±²¥ State Department of Education certification in severe disabilities. This MEd program is available only when the applicant has ÀË»¨Ö±²¥ Special Education Certification in one or more age-based areas (i.e., Early Childhood; Elementary; or Secondary/Middle). Prior to admission to the program, a copy of a valid MSDE Generic Special Education Certificate must be provided in the application. M.Ed programs are practitioner focused programs that focus on in-classroom experiences and prepare educators for working with students.
The Special Education, Master of Arts program focuses on diverse learner needs. The program is designed for educators who wish to focus on special education. An M.A. in the special education field assists educators with research and will incorporate the thesis option. Three hours of written examinations are required.
